Finding a good freeware bible can be difficult.  Below you will find links for those that I have found so far... If you know of a freeware bible that is not listed please e-mail me and let me know so I can add it to this page.  Ratings are based on my opinion of the Windows version of the software.  My bias, if a package doesn't include a commentary such as Matthew Henry's or Matthew Poole's then the best it can get is a 4-½ crosses rating.

The FreeBible v1.3.1 by: Steven Kollmansberger.  This bible works with Windows 95, 98, ME or NT 4.0/2000. FreeBible is large at almost 16 MB but it comes with the complete King James Version of the Bible and several reference aids in an easy-to-use interface.  This is the most complete freeware package I have found.

Theophilos v3.0 by: Ivan Jurik.  This Bible works with Windows 95, 98, ME or NT 4.0/2000.  The freeware version comes complete with a non-crippled full version of the Theophilos program, The complete King James Version of the Bible, Matthew Henry's Commentary and Easton's Bible Dictionary.  The basic package is 9.6 MB and is not as complete as The FreeBible (above) but it has a huge number of add-ons available (some free).

The Online Bible v1.02.02 by: The Bible Foundation.  The free Online Bible Starters Pack is a Windows 95, 98, ME program (but they sell a version for the Macintosh and have a MS-DOS version), runs about 7.5 MB, and comes complete with the  Full version of the Online Bible Software, the King James (Authorized) version of the English Bible (including Old and New testaments) with Strong's numbers and verb-parsings, and the Revised Eastons Bible Dictionary Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Cross References.  This package has the largest set of add-ons that I have seen.

The Sword Project v1.4.7 by: The CrossWire Bible Society.  This open source (GNU, GPL) project only comes with the King James Version of the Bible in the initial download (which is about 2.3 MB) and that you add modules on after the package is installed.  There is a Windows 95+ version and three (3) different Linux versions available (BibleTime, GnomeSword & Cheatah).

Free King James Bible by Deep Worship.  I feel kind of strange rating the King James Bible, after all, it is the Word of God.  On the otherhand, all this 2.8MB package has is a search feature for the text and compared to some of the other Windows 95+ packages it is very plain.  Still, It's The Bible and if you have a limited amount of space on your HD this works:)

Bible Plus by ???.  When first released this was an outstanding achievement in transferring the King James Bible to electronic media. A key feature in this program is the constant reminder of your place in the Bible--a small window at the top of the program keeps track of the chapter and verse currently in the viewing window. Also included is a sermon/note builder with standard Windows cut-and-paste features. This program would complement any household computer system.  Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.

Bible Multi-Media by: Kenneth Todd.  This Christian program contains a modern version of the bible (if you get the CD you also get the KJV but that isn't part of the 11 MB package from the Internet),  Everything about this package is based on the ability of the program to actually use speech as well as graphics. For instance, the daily reading from the bible based on the records obtained from a Franciscan can be displayed in sections or all at once (or you can set your own readings). With one click a speech interface engine provided by Microsoft will allow up to four Daily reading to be sent to speech, with the choice of including chapter and verse number or not (but all the voices are not included in the Internet version, you can get the missing voices, filename MSTTSA22L.EXE (approx. 5MB) from Michael's Home Turf) whew... The package also includes a bible word search utility, a Calendar of Christian Saints with a brief history (speech ready), a collection of Christian art pictures with brief text history, and a collection of Christian hymn music in midi and text format, (there is a music interface that calls the music player). Tested with Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, WinAMP and others.

eSword v3.6.1 by: Rick Meyers - This Windows 95a (or better) program is 17 MB for the basic package which includes the King James Version w/ Strong's numbers, Easton's dictionary, and Matthew Henry's commentary. You will want to download additional resources for maximum potential and enjoyment.  There are over 27 add-ons for this product including sixteen (16) different Bible translations and interpretations, four (4) commentaries, and six (6) dictionaries!  This product is awesome.

Bible Researcher by Victor Celorio - This is a Windows 9x KJV Bible program that is very small, only 1.45 MB!  The way this bible works is... you choose a search phrase and then choose the number of lines you want to see both before and after the phrase.  When the search is finished you have the requested text shown and you can then print it out.  Fairly nice:-)
